PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Taking place this weekend is the primary of a four-part collection highlighting African design, type, magnificence and tradition.
Demeatria Boccella is the pageant producer of Pageant Africana.
“I’m bringing Africa to Pittsburgh,” Boccella instructed KDKA’s Lisa Washington.
Boccella says the concept was born after she linked with a Parisian curator.
“As soon as we received to know each other, we realized that our missions had been aligned, because it pertains to elevating Black creatives, elevating and supporting Black creatives. I stated the one distinction is we reside on completely different continents,” Boccella added.
The 2 initially deliberate to create a mission in Pittsburgh, celebrating the variety of the African diaspora, however had been pressured to pivot to a digital pageant due to the pandemic.
“We’re hoping that in these tough instances this might be a second of encouragement, a second of inspiration,” stated Boccella.
The pageant features a vogue editorial produced in Ghana, a showcase of African equipment, residence décor and a live performance — an occasion Boccella describes as well timed and crucial.
She added, “It’s so necessary on so many ranges…as a result of it’s about fairness. It’s empowerment. It’s about celebrating who we’re as individuals of African descent.”
There are plans for an in-person exhibition in Pittsburgh within the fall of 2021.
