Within the 30-memberLAHDC (Leh), 26 members are elected and 4 nominated with out voting proper. The outgoing council has 18 BJP representatives, 5 from the Congress, 2 from NC and an impartial. The competition was primarily between BJP and Congress as NC and PDP didn’t participate within the polls. The Aam Admi Party fielded 19 candidates. The elections occurred within the shadow of the border battle with China in jap Ladakh. A recent wave of Covid-19 too posed a problem.
The hill council in Leh was created underneath LAHDC Act in 1995. One other hill council in Kargil was fashioned in 2003. Earlier, the Peoples Motion for Sixth Schedule for Ladakh – consisting of influential spiritual, political, cultural and civil society teams – had known as for election boycott demanding constitutional safeguards for the UT. They withdrew the boycott name after house minister Amit Shah promised to handle their calls for inside 15 days of formation of the brand new council.
